Whitsun Bank Holiday saw the return of the Cockfield Art Show which was another great success. The three days saw nearly 450 people visit the Village Hall to browse an excellent range of artworks and our sales were double last years. We received excellent feedback from both artists and visitors and it looks as though this event will become a regular fixture in our calendar.
On Sunday 12th June we were pleased to team up with St Peter’s Church, the Congregational Church and the Parish Council to celebrate HM the Queen’s 90th birthday with a “street party” on Great Green. Around 200 people braved the weather (which, as it turned out, was not as bad as some had predicted) and turned up with their picnics and gazebos. We had games, children’s face painting and biscuit decorating, a cake decorating competition and finished up by toasting Her Majesty with a drop of fizz, singing the National Anthem and eating the cakes! A good time was had by all. Of course these events only succeed as a result of the contributions of the community, so it’s thanks to everyone who helped set up and pack away, organised the games and entertainment, made the cakes, provided the fizz for the toast, and turned up with their family, friends (and picnics). I think we can say that Cockfield again showed the way when it comes to holding “village” events (and our pictures were on the Bury Free Press website to prove it!).
And so, on to our next event………..
The Village Hall’s 40th Birthday
To celebrate the 40th birthday of the Village Hall we have planned an evening of entertainment on Saturday 16th July. We have booked local band, Quaff, to lead the activities and we will be providing a cheese supper. Tickets will be available from the Post Office and are priced at £7.50. There will be a licensed bar and doors will open at 7.15 pm.
The Village Hall has served us well over the last 40 years so come along and wish this excellent village facility a Happy Birthday!!
What’s next?
The Village Show will take place on Sunday 11th September – it’s fast approaching, so, hopefully, the fruit and veg are battling the weather and fighting hard to be best in show. As with most things, we’ve made some improvements this year and the show will be better than ever
This is followed by the 60s and 70s evening with Kevin Barry on Saturday 17th September. Tickets will be £6 on the door and there will be a barbecue and licensed bar. Doors open at 7.15 pm.
On Saturday November 19th we’re planning a Murder Mystery Evening (with supper!) – watch this space for details.
Future ideas
We’ll soon start looking at ideas for next year’s programme of events. We’re always open to suggestions from within the village as to what YOU would like us to do, so if you have any ideas please let us know
Our AGM is on November 25th so please come along – remember it is YOUR Community Council and it is at the AGM that our direction for the next year is decided, so it is important that everyone with an opinion about the way we are going or suggestions for future events comes along.
Waste paper collection
The next waste paper collections will be on Sunday 26th June and Sunday 31st July. As usual, collections will start at 9.00 am.
