Suffolk Village of the Year 2023

Community Council News, February 2020

First of all it was good to see so many villagers turn out for the Hangover Hike on New Years Day which this year started and finished at the Horseshoes Inn. Thanks go to Rod Williams for leading the walk. The Inn as ever provided a warm welcome at the end.

The Community Council are pleased to confirm that the new and much larger cinema screen and speaker system have now been installed in the Village Hall.

The next Cockfield Community Cinema evening will be on Fri 28 Feb when we will be screening Judy, a biographical drama film about American singer and actress Judy Garland (Rating 12A.)

Thirty years after starring in “The Wizard of Oz,” beloved actress and singer Judy Garland arrives in London to perform sold-out shows at the Talk of the Town nightclub. While there, she reminisces with friends and fans and begins a whirlwind romance with musician Mickey Deans, her soon-to-be fifth husband. Renee Zellweger stars as Judy Garland, all reviews suggesting an Oscar nomination for Best Actress being highly likely.

Tickets are £4.50 on the door and along with the bar there are teas and coffees as well as ice-creams and sweets.

We are delighted to be organizing a Quiz Night with Fish N Chip Supper at the Village Hall on Sat 22 Feb. Tickets at £8 per person are now on sale at the Post Office for teams of 4 – 6. Please email quiz@cockfield.org.uk or call Neil Ashton on 01284 827238 with your team name and number of entrants.  We need to plan for numbers carefully on this evening and are also anticipating a strong turnout for this event so please get your tickets early if you can.

On Sat 21 Mar we have a Swing Dance, which builds on the success of the first inaugural dance last year. Tickets at £7.50 per person are again on sale at the Post Office. Doors open 7.30pm, with a free dance class at 8pm. Bar, tea, coffee and cake all available!

April is a busy month with three events

  • Sat 4 th Apr we have a Charity Dance in memory of Paul Brinkley, with dancing to the tune of Kenny Lee and Hustler
  • Sat 11 th Apr (Easter) we have our ever popular Duck Race at Earls Meadow (hopefully this year the water will be fast and furious!)
  • Sat 18 th Apr we have a Hedgehog Awareness Event at the Village Hall (free entry, more details in next month’s edition)

Waste Paper Collections continue on the last Sunday of the month, the 26 th January and then the 23 rd February, as usual collections will begin at 9.00 am. Please leave your papers out for the collectors in a prominent position. Proceeds from the collections go towards the running costs of the Pavilion and are therefore very valuable to the Village.
