In 1934, Jimmy Erskine (Ian McKellen) is a malicious theatre critic for The Daily Chronicle who writes harsh reviews of plays. When the newspaper’s new owner, Viscount David Brooke (Mark Strong), threatens to fire him, Erskine plots revenge. Erskine convinces a young actress, Nina Land (Gemma Arterton), to seduce Brooke in exchange for glowing reviews. Erskine then blackmails Brooke into giving him his job back. When Brooke discovers that Land is also the lover of his son-in-law, he kills himself.
